Alexander Rulkens

Alexander Rulkens is a Copenhagen based artist from the Netherlands, who is exploring the limits of LED’s and interactivity, embedded in a fascination of how Nature creates patterns, both aesthetically and in different biological interplays and dynamics.

Alexander studied at Eindhoven University of Technology and graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor in Design and Technology. Since then he has been working as an interaction designer and developer. With an affinity for startups, he has been working for a number of them, in the field of 3D printing, machine aided design and online graphics based software. Since 2009 he has been running Studio Ludens, a company aimed at creating design tools for creatives. One of those tools is called Repper (repper.app), an app to create patterns for graphic design, print on demand and fabric design. It blends mathematics, playful interaction and graphics programming in an easy to use, powerful and fun interface.

In 2023 he started Studio Synapse, with the vision of creating large-scale interactive light installations inspired by nature. The responsivity of the installations blurs the lines between technology and biology and mirrors our own tech-entwined societies and minds – placing us with all our complexity back into nature, at the same time as weaving nature into technology.
