the neuron plaza

In the distance you hear laughter, and as you move around the corner of the rain-wet Copenhagen harbour side, The Neuron Plaza appears.

The glowing presence of the neuron illuminates the area, inviting passersby to explore the intricate workings of the human mind – and our social bonds. Its luminous dendrites, signalling with vibrant lights to smaller neurons, form a network that reflects the interplay of neurons in our own minds and our own society.

With a gentle touch upon one or more of the available synapses, the installation awakens to interactive play. When a synapse is touched, the corresponding dendrite lights up, radiating a soft glow that spreads through the entire neuron-shaped structure. As it reaches the companion neurons, they respond in harmony, setting off a mesmerising ripple effect across the plaza. The plaza transforms into a playground of creativity, empowering citizens and visitors to become co-creators of their shared experience.

The synapses respond to the cumulative touch of multiple individuals, amplifying the light effects and creating an immersive symphony of both synchronised and scattered colours and patterns. This collective influence fosters a sense of unity and collaboration among the participants, forging bonds that transcend the boundaries of individuality. The dance between The Neuron and its surroundings is visible from both sides of the harbour and the bridges.

As people in the course of the evening bike home and leave The Neuron Plaza, it steadily stabilises in response to the surroundings and allows the weather and soundscape of the city to be the nourishment for the neurons interplay.
